Ingredients
- 1/2 cup apricot preserves
- 1/4 cup pineapple juice
- 1/4 cup water
- 2 tablespoons white vinegar
- 2 tablespoons corn syrup
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon paprika
- 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper, optional
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
For the Cornstarch Slurry:
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon cold water
Instructions
- Add the apricot preserves, pineapple juice, water, white vinegar, corn syrup, soy sauce, mustard, ketchup, brown sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, cayenne pepper, and salt to a small saucepan.
- Place the saucepan over medium-low heat and whisk until the preserves melt and the mixture becomes smooth.
- Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer and cook for 3 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- In a small bowl, whisk together 1 teaspoon cornstarch and 1 tablespoon cold water until smooth.
- Slowly pour the cornstarch slurry into the simmering sauce while whisking constantly.
- Cook for 1 to 2 minutes, stirring continuously, until the sauce becomes glossy and lightly thickened.
- Remove from the heat and let the sauce cool for several minutes. It will continue to thicken as it cools.
- Taste and adjust with extra vinegar for tanginess, brown sugar for sweetness, or water if the sauce is too thick.
- For an extra-smooth texture, strain the sauce through a fine-mesh sieve if desired.
- Serve with chicken nuggets, chicken tenders, fries, egg rolls, or your favorite crispy foods.
Notes
- Use smooth apricot preserves or apricot jam for the best texture.
- Always mix cornstarch with cold water before adding it to the sauce to prevent lumps.
- Do not overcook the sauce, as it will thicken more as it cools.
- Add vinegar gradually if you prefer a tangier flavor.
- For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free soy sauce or tamari and check all packaged ingredients for gluten.
- Store leftover sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
- If refrigerated sauce becomes too thick, stir in a small amount of water before serving.
